Establishment of 'Zubeen Kshetra' Memorial
Guwahati, Oct 21: The committee responsible for establishing a lasting tribute to the renowned cultural figure Zubeen Garg has declared that the memorial will be named 'Zubeen Kshetra'. This name pays homage to the artist's significant impact on Assam's music and cultural heritage.
This announcement was made public following a committee meeting held in Guwahati on Monday.
Garima Garg, the late artist's wife and chair of the committee, addressed the media, stating that the memorial, located in Hatimura, Sonapur, aims to serve as a cultural landmark that embodies Garg’s artistic essence and connects his admirers to his lasting legacy.
“The title ‘Zubeen Kshetra’ was chosen in unison to acknowledge his deep impact on Assamese art, music, and society. This site will not only serve as a place of remembrance but also as a venue that celebrates his creative spirit and the principles he represented,” Garima explained.
The committee, formed on October 16 following a Cabinet decision, comprises several notable figures and family members of Garg, including his sister Palmee Borthakur, Shyamantak Gautam, Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Biren Singha, Anuradha Sarma Pujari, Pranjal Saikia, Pulak Banerjee, Dulal Manki, Tarali Sarma, and Sudarshan Thakur, among others.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that the Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to prepare a comprehensive plan for the construction of the permanent memorial at Kamarkuchi, Sonapur.
“A committee has been established to review the proposal and suggest a final design to the government. Construction will commence promptly once the PWD's plan is submitted and approved,” Sarma noted.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that the decision to erect a permanent memorial comes in response to the steady influx of visitors paying their respects to the late singer since his demise.
“Zubeen Garg’s legacy is cherished by every Assamese, and this memorial will ensure that his spirit remains everlasting,” Sarma added.
